Accredited Standards Committee X12. ASC X12 develops standards for electronic data interchange, is administered by the Data Interchange Standards Association (DISA), and is accredited to submit its documents to ANSI for approval as American National Standards. X12 has developed a number of message standards for purchase order data, invoice data, and other commonly used business documents.

The Insurance Subcommittee (X12N) has developed a group of documents related to providing medical insurance claims transmission, including enrollment/maintenance (834), disability insurance claim (837), and claim payment/advice (835). None of these documents are currently approved as American National Standards, although some are currently considered draft standards for trial use. X12 intends to pursue approval of them as American National Standards in the future.
